The town began as a small Indian settlement on the banks of the River Des Plaines in 1833. A post office was established there in 1835 and growth continued until most of West Chicago was taken by annexation by Chicago in 1893. Today, WestChicago retains much of its pioneer history with its rich Dutch and German heritage as well as its large Irish and Italian population dating back to the 1800s. One such individual was John Gorman who founded Gorman Glass Company which became one of America's largest glass manufacturers during that time period During World War II many local men worked at Navyyards located throughout Illinois including Naval Station Great Lakes where he worked his entire career beginning when he was just 16 years old

The area now known as Chicago was part of the Indian country controlled by the Potawatomi people. In 1803, during the American Revolutionary War, General Anthony Wayne attacked and defeated British forces at Battle of Fort Dearborn, driving them out of the Northwest Territory. Chicago became a city in 1847, following its incorporation as a town from parts of Cook County. The city experienced rapid growth throughout the 19th century due to its key role as a transportation hub and manufacturing center. Chicago became an important center for American politics during the 20th century, with many famous political figures being born or raised in or around the city.
