West Chicago is a neighborhood in the city of Chicago, Illinois. It is bordered by the Armour City on the north, the Englewood section of West Side on the east, and the Lawndale sections of SouthSide on the south. The population was 97 percent white when it was annexed to Chicago in 1871. The population has since declined with increasing Hispanic and Asian populations. The first European settlers in what is now West Chicago were French Canadians who had landed there in 1795. They built homes near present-day Ottawa Street and Wabash Avenue. A school operated here from 1802 until 1808; it was known as "L'Academy" (the Academy). In 1851, a group of Englishmen led by Captain John Noyes purchased 640 acres (248 ha) of land at Warsaw Road and Pulaski Avenue for $1,000 from Nicholas Wrigley II, president of theChicago Board of Trade. This area became known as "Noyes Park." Noyes developed it into a thriving agricultural community that grew rapidly during those early years; he also founded two churches here: St. James Baptist Church (1852) and Saint Andrew Greek Orthodox Church (1858). During its heyday, West Chicago boasted more than 20 businesses including three general stores, six wagon shops, four harness shops, a bankroll trust office and four tanneries. In 1907–1908 alone, this community produced over 1 million pounds (500 kg) of bacon and 2 million eggs! When annexation to Chicago occurred in 1871 – due to disagreements over voting rights within Cook County – most residents here chose to remain within their own communities rather than joining forces with other neighborhoods in what would become Loop South Side or DowntownChicago respectively. Even after west side incorporation resulted in an increased number of black residents living near downtown – which caused some friction among white residents – many residents continued to identify themselves primarily as Irish Catholics or Germans surnamed Schmidt or Hecht rather than simply "West Chicagoans." This separation didn't last long however; within five years following annexation whole blocks east of Ottawa between First Street & Washington Boulevard had been taken up by new buildings erected solely for west side homeowners such as meatpacking companies like Armour & Co., Jardine Matheson & Co., Singer Sewing Machine Company etcetera who - although they paid taxes inside city limits - used their resources nearby on Randolph Road just outside ward line for business purposes only without contributing any services to west side citizens nor even displaying their windows within ward boundaries! This pattern would continue unabated until 1924 when wards were reorganized following vowing by Mayor George Biddle that all “white” people residing inside city limits should have equal access thereto regardlessOf race once all “colored” people residing therein had been removed! Afterward businesses located along Randolph Rd/Washington Blvd came under pressure from newly arrived Koreans whose families had relocated there postwar largely because they could not find work locally either day laborer jobs or managerial positions anywhere else close enough so they could afford decent housing
