West Chicago, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 24,983 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is bordered by the city of Chicago to the east and northwest, Peoria to the northeast and west, and La Porte to the southwest. West Chicago was founded in 1871 when a group of farmers drove out an Indian party that had been occupying their land. The settlers named their new community after General David Dixon's victory over Native Americans at Battle of West Point on November 13th, 1871. Dixon was an American general who served in Mexico during the Mexican-American War and later became secretary of war under Ulysses S Grant. The first post office in West Chicago opened in 1872. The name for WestChicago changed several times before settling on "West Side" in 1895 when it became part of Cook County as part of a annexation referendum held by then-Governor George Ryan. In 1907, "Westerly" was chosen as its permanent name following ratification by voters within one year of its adoption by county commissioners In 1927, Chilton Motors Company purchased land east of town from Hutton Manufacturing Co., which had been operating there since 1915 as a grocery store and gas station. Chilton's move into what would become its iconic plant began what has been called "the greatest injection into southern Illinois economy." That same year saw also the opening of Wernick Chevrolet Division which manufactured Speedsters for NASCAR racing events across America until 1978; Wernick also produced Oldsmobile Chevrolets until 1981 The Chilton Plant closed down completely in 1974 but parts were continued production at a facility located near Midway Airport until 1984; this factory produced Buick 85s through 1992 before moving all operations to Lansing, Michigan In recent years, much development has taken place around or within West Chicago including: 1) Park Meadows Mall - A large shopping mall with over 200 stores anchors including Macy's (since 2006), Sears (since 1994), JCPenney (since 2004), Nordstrom Rack (2005), Kohl's (2007), Dickies Sporting Goods (2009) and Menard's Jewelers since 2009 2) hundreds more housing units built specifically for retail workers such as Fordham University Medical Center - One million square feet dedicated just to retail clinics/patient rooms; additional hospital space will be developed on site once construction is complete 3) huge renovation project underway along Evanston Road between Northwest Highway and Pulaski Road - This project includes replacing aging infrastructure with new roads/bridges/pipes etc., creating up to 350 jobs 4) massive redevelopment planned for Hammondsport Village - This include multiple high-end retailers like Neiman Marcus & Apple Store among others 5) extensive光/LED lighting projects being completed throughout town 6) plans are currently ongoing for another major Kroger store should one become available

This has led to increased employment opportunities for residents and brought about increased retail spending within the city limits as well as more domestic tourism which has helped revive some aspects of local culture including art galleries and restaurants being popular tourist destinations.
