West Chicago, Illinois is home to the largest ammunition industry in the Midwest. Ammunition production began in the late 1800s with small-scale operations. The industry has grown steadily over the years and now employs more than 100,000 workers across a dozen factories and warehouses. Ammunition products include pistols, shotguns, rifles, hunting rifles, grenades, mortar rounds and other munitions. Ammunition production started in West Chicago because of the need for reliable ammunition for handguns and shotguns that were used during the American Revolution. The first factory was built on State Street just north of downtown West Chicago. In 1825, a second factory was built on Randolph Avenue south of State Street. This facility produced cannons and rifle cartridges as well as shotgun shells and pistol cartridges. During World War I (1914-1918), ammunition production increased significantly due to wartime demand for artillery shells, grenade rounds and mortar rounds. By 1917, there were five ammo factories in West Chicago; two were destroyed by fire in 1918 but new plants were erected on Randolph Avenue and State Street to produce additional rounds for artillery guns and rifles. In 1919-1920 an armory was constructed at 2nd Ward Park across from present day Northwestern Community College east of downtown West Chicago using lot No 4659 – which is still owned by Northern Illinois University’s Armstrong Center for Environmental Studies today! At this time gun powder also came from Indiana so it made sense to plant an armory nearby as well! Ammunition production continued until 1942 when all firearms manufacturing stopped in America due to World War II shortages caused by rationing policies set by Roosevelt’s New Deal Coalition government

Ammunition history in West Chicago, Illinois began with the opening of the Armoury and Rifle Shop on Dearborn Street in 1859. The shop was run by Captain John Fenton and his son, Captain John Fenton Jr. In 1870, Captain John Fenton III opened a rifle range on the east side of town. In 1872, he purchased land near State Street and Dearborn Avenue to house his ammo store. The first building on that property was constructed in 1874-75. He renamed his store the Armoury and Rifle Shop again in 1876 after becoming Receiver for Cook County, Illinois. The store continued to be operated by the Fentons until it closed its doors in 1893. In 1898, skirmishers from Company D (now First Brigade) 2nd Regiment Armory were quartered at Mrs Bloomfield's Palace Hotel where they fired their weapons daily from dawn to dusk for three weeks during the Chicago Fire of 1898. Ammunition stores along Dearborn Avenue filled with rounds as customers sought refuge inside buildings or took cover under parked cars. The fire destroyed many businesses including the Armoury and Rifle Shop which reopened two days later but was completely destroyed by flames that reached up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit according to one report Captain John Fenton III donated all of his firearms sales profits from 9898 onwards to charity
