Ammunition production began in earnest in what is now Johnson County when entrepreneur George Wickersham founded a company that manufactured gunpowder and Shot-Shooters calibers of bullets. His company became one of the leading producers of ammunition in the Midwest, manufacturing rounds for both rifles and pistols. In 1922, Wickersham's son, Clyde Wickersham, took over his father's business. Clyde Wickersham continued to produce high-quality ammunition products until his death in 1984. In addition to his Dad's legacy of making quality ammunition products, Clyde also donated land to create a shooting range and pistol academy adjacent to his home in West Chicago. Today, these facilities continue to be used by locals and visitors alike for training purposes as well as hosting events such as hunter safety seminars and target practice sessions. Today, ammo production remains an important part of local life with jobs available for traditionalists as well as those who specialize in reloading or converting old firearms into casings compatible with modern cartridges.
