Waukegan, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 23,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Waukegan were traders and missionaries from Spain in the early seventeenth century. The town was founded by James Kieft on May 1, 1836 as a result of his purchase of land from the Peoria Township trustees. Kieft named his new settlement after John Jacob Astor's father-in-law, Adam Putnam. By 1839, Waukegan had developed into an important center for commerce and industry due to its location on the Belvidere Rail Road and its access to markets in Chicagoland and outside of Illinois. In 1846 Waukegan voted to become a city; it did not gain full city status until 1893. The arrival of automobiles during World War II led to dramatic growth in the economy and population of Waukegan; today it remains one of America's most prosperous small towns with strong cultural ties to Chicago.

In recent years, Waukegan has emerged as a leaders in the city's revitalization process. The history of Waukegan goes back to 1847 when Edward I. Murphy and John C. Noyes located their small community on the banks of the Chicago River near what is now known as State Street in downtown Chicago. The young couple saw that this location had potential for growth due to its strategic location between two key waterways - one providing access toChicago's rapidly growing commercial district and another that connected with rural areas east of downtown. With this in mind, Murphy & Noyes began development of their settlement by purchasing land from Native American tribes who inhabited the area at that time. The tribe members were forced out of their homes due toretched economic conditions and so they were unable or unwilling to sell their land back to developers; instead, they donated it to Waukegan investors underwritten by Congress during the first American Civil War (1861-1865). In 1847, Edward I. Murphy arrived in central Illinois after spending several years living in New York City where he had worked as a clerk at Custom House No 1 on Wall Street (now Exchange Place). After moving westward through Indiana into Racine County – then part of Wisconsin – he discovered rich saltpeter deposits at Galesburg India Point along Lake Michigan which led him to begin developing his new town site on what is today North Freeway Boulevard just north of Interstate 90 exit 33A about midway between Chicago’s Loop Business District and Northwestern University’s McCormick Place Campus]. At first called “Murphyville” after its founder because it was his hometown before moving away from it while still living there [the name change occurred when business interests compelled him finallyto move closertothe Piano Building], Waukegan quickly became an important industrial center due both to its proximityToChicagoandits extensive saltpeter production capabilities which made it oneofthe leading producersofpetroleum products in America during the late 19th century]. Waukegan was founded by Isaac W. Ziegler on May 10, 1847. The town was named for Waukegan Creek which flows through the town. The first store in the town opened in 1851, and the first post office opened in 1856. Waukegan became a city on December 17, 1907.
