During World War II, large amounts of munitions were produced at nearby Decatur Arsenal and processed here until 1942 when production moved to nearby Rockford Arsenal due to wartime shortages elsewhere. The war left behind an active industrial zone that still exists today with companies such as Caterpillar Inc., Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation and American Bridge Company manufacturing products including bridges and other heavy engineering equipment statewide during the late 20th century and into the 21st century. In addition to its role as a manufacturing center for Midwest America during this time period it also saw service members return home which led to increased shopping opportunities available on Main Street which included many small businesses that opened up during wartime when people needed goods but couldn't find them locally or got too expensive prices from stores back then like Sears Roebuck etcetera
