Waukegan, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 117,574 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County. Waukegan is part of Chicago metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Waukegan was Captain John Smith on his trip from New York City to London in 1614. He named the town after General James Waughan who had been killed during the English Civil War at Battle of Worcester (1643). In 1836, Judge Jeremiah O'Neill built a dam across the Chicago River and renamed it for General George Washington that year. In 1847–48, Isaac Newton Briggs organized a group of farmers who formed the precursor to modern day Businessmen's Bank (later Morgan Stanley) in Wauconda Creek Township. The early years of business were difficult because there was no water available to irrigate their crops; however, they eventually developed into one of Cook County's largest commercial interests with branches throughout the county and beyond. The Metropole Electric Railway reached Wauconda Creek Valley near present-day Hudson Drive in November 1904; this made possible shipment by rail directly from factories across town to consumers' homes or businesses within minutes instead of taking days or weeks via riverboats or wagons filled with assorted produce
