Waukegan is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 61,574 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in the county and one of Chicago's five main cities. The first Europeans to visit what is now Waukegan were French fur traders in 1671-72. Jesuit missionaries arrived in 1773 and started missionary work among the native peoples. A smallpox epidemic killed many of them in 1775; but they resumed their missionary work and built a school on North Avenue in 1777 as part of their effort to convert the natives to Christianity. In 1815, when Illinois became a state, Waukegan became its capital. In 1847, when this capital was moved from Alton to Rockford, Waukegan again became its capital; but it reverted back to Alton after only four years because of financial difficulties caused by agricultural depression in that region during that time period. In 1857, when Rockford was incorporated as a city, Waukegan Joined it as one of its first wards and has been an annexe ever since with no breaking off from City Hall services or functions within the boundaries of City Hall itself! In 1910 there were only 2 people living in Waukegan limits (the population then being around 10). By 1930 there were over 4500 people living within 1/2 mile of downtown...and by 1950 over 10000 people! Today’s population size today would be almost 35000 if not for suburban growth which continues unabated throughOUT CITY LIMITS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Waukegan is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 508 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name "Waukegan" comes from the Potawatomi word wagogeen meaning "to go or come". The first permanent settler in what is now Waukegan was Amos Kelley, who arrived in 1795. A post office called Waukegan was established in 1819 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1903. The first school opening in Waukegan was on November 1, 1837 by Rev. John Fenton with twenty-six students under his charge. In 1840, the first church building (dedicated to St. John the Evangelist) was erected on North Water Street and served as a parish center for many years before being replaced by a more modern structure in 1907. During World War I, Wauconda had been an important training ground for military personnel of all nations; within months of America's entry into the war, President Woodrow Wilson convened a conference at Soldier Field to discuss how to best use American resources against Germany and Austria-Hungary. At that meeting, representatives from 25 countries were present including representatives from Chicago's largest municipality which at that time consisted of just over 2 square miles (5 km2). One idea considered was forming an international organization to provide aid to troops fighting overseas but this proposal fell through because no one wanted their hometowns' resources taken away by another country during wartime efforts without compensation... On April 6th 1917 Mayor Samuel Jankowski submitted an ordinance establishing 'the City of Wauconda'. Prior thereto there had only been rumours and suggestions among some citizens about such an establishment... After much discussion it became clear that this would be something more than just a rumor as early as May 1915 when Businessman Abram Sauer purchased property near Hubbard Avenue and State Street which would become known as Sauer Park after him; he donated $10 towards construction of what would eventually become Wauconda Civic Center located adjacent to today's former High School campus between Hubbard Ave & Halsted Rd.. The park opened on October 12th 1916 with free admission for all residents except those employed by Chicago Parks Department! In 1924 Emanuel Hesselmann designed and built what is now Northwestern Memorial Hospital on Irving Park Road across from Northwestern University which helped spur suburban growth around downtownChicago so much so that two blocks west of Sheffield Drive today you can find Northwestern Memorial Hospital’s original campus complete with its own golf course! Many homes were built along Sheffield Drive between Irving Park Road & Halsted Rd., most notably: Reid House (now demolished), Glidden House (now used as part of Northwestern Memorial Hospital), Gorman House (now used as part of Hesselmann Tower), Harry Cunanan Home (now Currently occupied by Evergreen apartments) . . . All told there are over 100 buildings/ structures associated with varying stages/ ownerships throughout history associated with the City of Wauconda!
