Waukegan is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,554 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Waukegan was founded in 1868 by German immigrants and became a city on November 1, 1893. On February 16, 2014, Waukegan became one of 10 wards of Chicago's City Council effective with the 2013 elections. The first settler in what is now Waukegan was Peter Kesselmann who arrived from Germany in 1868 and homesteaded land west of present day Wacker Drive on May 3, 1868. He named his land "Wacker." In 1870 Abraham Wagner moved to what is now east side of State Road 42 (now Elmhurst Avenue) and named his property "Wahrstadt." This name may have been derived from the fact that Wahrstadt creek ran through it. soon after he erected a log cabin which served as their home until 1870 when they built a frame house on the same lot next door to become "Petershausen" or Peters House. In 1872 Michael Nitsch bought 100 acres south of where Wacker Drive now stands from Wilhelm Hauer for $840 cash and took possession on October 5th. Nitsch had come to America from Bavaria about two years earlier as an engineer with His Serene Majesties Landesbank erasing interest rates for farmers in anticipation of increased production due to new transportation technologies such as railwaysurcharge laws passed by President Ulysses S Grant during this time period! He operated his farm for many years before selling it to John Jervis who renamed it "Nitsch's Prairie". When this property changed hands again several times over the years various families called it various names including: Hauer's Prairie; Jervis' Prairie; Nitsch's Prairie; etcetera until finally John Pinto purchased it from John Jervis in 1907 and renamed it "Walsh's Prairie" after himself! The first post office located here was established at Wiseman’s Grove on July 12th, 1896 under name “Hubertsville” but changed its call sign to “Waulk’s Grove” because Michael Walsh had donated some land thereon which included part of what is currently Washington Park! A few blocks away stood another early post office known as “Foley’s Post Office” which mail orders were processed here until 1918 when Foley’s heirs transferred operations to Rockford IL! After Foley’s death local residents began using this name also! The current spelling used today- Walsh Park- comes about because Dr James A Walsh donated most of his woodlot near current day South Side Ave & Washtenaw St sometime between 1916-1920!! In 1924 Dr James A Walsh donation doubled back providing yet ANOTHER woodlot adjoining Washtenaw St making him owner/operator/manager/cooperator OF 4 different post offices all within walkable distance for almost 50 years !!
