In 1814, West Side Village was established by John Cranch and other pioneers who came westward along railroad tracks that then crossed Lake Michigan at Northwest Branch Road near present day Midway Boulevard (now Lincoln Avenue). At that time it consisted of just twelve homes - all built by Cranch himself or his associates – including one large frame house located at Niles Boulevard and Pulaski Road which still stands today and is used as office space for local businesses Eventually West Side Village grew into what we know today with platted areas stretching from Northwest Branch Road to Pulaski Road east of State Street north of Grand Avenue (the current site of Lawndale), Bloomingdale Avenue south to Clarkston Avenue west of State Street (now Wood Dale), Union Parkwest side extending south from Cicero Avenue to Harlem Drive east of Harlem Drive (/ formerly Diversey Boulevard) finally Kedzie Boulevard running north from Ivar Munch Blvd / Higgins Blvd all within three blocks or so bounded by Northwestern Expressway / I-55 on one side; Randolph Rd on another side – making for a total area about equal to that now occupied by filed neighborhoods – Humboldt Park/ Logan Square being excluded until later . zip code 65701 . Manufacturing included tannery, breweries (three locally), meatpacking plants (two local), pharmaceuticals (eager to take advantage of advances made by Eli Lilly and Company) and other products exported around the world during that time period including items such as coffee beans that were shipped downriver to La Crosse for roasting before shipment back upriver to Chicago via railcar One early manufacturer who produced electric streetlights for the city was Gales Brothers General Electric Company which began production in 1922 In 1925 a large water tower/pump house complex was completed west of downtown along SR-134 That same year construction began on an expressway called North Shore Drive which took its name from then- Mayor John Fenton's Progressivism campaign slogan "For We Who Serve" The North Shore Drive Expressway served as a shortcut route for motorists heading northward out of town onto Interstate 90 while bypassing downtown . Construction stopped abruptly due to financial problems about halfway through its development when Northwestern Bell Telephone purchased most all assets underlying IL Route 134 between Elmhurst Avenue and Cicero Avenue
