Waukegan is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 23,656 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County. Waukegan was first settled in 1848 and became a town in 1857. The city annexed the village of West Side in 1961 and its current name honors John F. Walsh, who served as mayor from 1957 to 1961 and as a U.S. senator from Illinois from 1971 to 1983. In 1848, Waukegan was founded by men coming down the Chicago River from Indiana on horseback named John Fenton and Amos Kendall, Jr.. They named their new settlement after General Anthony Wayne who had stopped there for supplies en route to his battle with Native Americans at Three Forks over the winter of 1847-1848. In 1850, Waukegan's first post office opened under the name "Bellefontaine." In 1860, it changed its name to "Waukegan." The city grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to railroads being built through it by Northern Pacific Railway (NPT) and other companies looking for land along those routes for farming or manufacturing purposes; Waukegan became one of these areas. Steel production also increased during this time because blast furnaces were developed in nearby Schenectady Township and blast-fired steel production began becoming more widespread throughout North America beginning around 1900 In 1923 – following World War I – Chicago Mayor James Rennie announced plans to build what would become known as “The Great Western Highway” which would run through downtown Chicago including parts of Waukegan right up until Lake Michigan This project never came to fruition but marked an important moment in downtown Chicago development In 1924 – following World War II – President Franklin D Roosevelt dedicated what would be known as Soldier Field Stadium – located just east of downtownChicago – which played host to many major American football games during that era such as Super Bowls During this time period too, Waukegan saw significant growth with businesses moving into town including Jello Belly Restaurants which opened their first store on State Street in 1925 In 1958–Walsh took office as Mayor; he presided over a period when seen as one of most dramatic transformations ever seen within Cook County government He helped spur redevelopment efforts around town culminating with construction of numerous parks/residences/ cultural institutions including McCormick Place Convention Center (now home to Quicken Loans Arena), Kane Hall Theatre Company (now home to Lincoln Park Zoo), John Fonda Plaza (now home to Sears Tower), Pritzker Pavilion (now home Toombs Museum) and several others . Under Walsh’s leadership, Waukegans skyline quickly began coming alive with high-rise buildings such as One First National Bank Building (1962), Northwestern Mutual Tower (1965), Marquette Towers blocks away at Harrison & Pulaski Streets NW corner Kedzie Avenue NW now part of Millennium Parkade(1969)) while smaller neighborhoods like Elmwood Shores continued experiencing rapid growth typified by Bennington Road NE between Irving Park Rd & Damen Ave becoming one block long . This continued success led Walsh later that year into office for another four terms before retiring at 75 years old . During Walsh’s tenure there were also some key changes within local government: incorporation was granted for neighboring Evanston Township on January 1st 1959 followed soon thereafter by annexation of South Shore Village resulting in an increase in population size from 602 residents at peak [in 1960] up until 2269 residents [in 2000] . Finally upon Walsh’s retirement effective November 15th 1969 , longtime City Manager Harry Siegel became acting Mayor pending election beginning December 5th 1969 ; Siegel won reelection unopposed making himCity Manager forevermore
In 1814, Waukegan was founded by Isaac Chauncey. It was named after the nearby village of Wauconda. In 1827, it became a town and in 1847, it became an incorporated city. In 1954, it was merged into the larger Chicago suburb of Lake Forest.
