Wauconda was founded in 1836 by Captain George Armstrong and his family. The town was originally named "Mackinac" after the Mackinac Island chain. The name "Wauconda" was chosen because of its close proximity to the city of Chicago, which at that time lay about 60 miles to the south. Wauconda rapidly grew into a formally organized community, with a post office, school, Methodist church, public square and several residences. In 1854 Wauconda became the site of one of the first railroad crossings in Illinois. By 1870 Waucondon had developed into a substantial agricultural center, with large holdings in corn, beans and other crops. By 1900 Wauconda had become an important commercial center with a population of over 100 people. As part of the Great Migration of American citizens during World War II many residents left for California and other parts of the United States. Today few if any buildings remain from when Wauconda was an thriving community full of people who lived and worked together for their local economy and social betterment
Wauconda was founded in 1864 by the Paley family. The town became a stop on the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. Wauconda's first store was built in 1868. In 1890, the city of Wauconda was incorporated.
