Washington is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Washington was founded by George Washington and his family in 1783 as Mount Vernon on the Potomac River. Washington named it for himself and his father-in-law, James Kieft. When Jackson won election as President in November 1830 and announced plans to divide Illinois into five districts—one for each state except Indiana—Washington opposed him because Jackson would have none of its citizens voting within his own district; however, Jackson carried all but one of the six congressional districts resulting from the division while winning all but three of the eight statewide offices that year. In 1847 Congress passed an act creating Cook County – then known as North Side Township – out of parts of Northwest Side Township and South Side Township (now West Side) on accountof their proximity to downtown Chicago;[6] thus began what has been called "The Great Migration"(upwards OFC 50% since 1860)[7] during which more than sixty thousand people left Cook County for municipal or industrial opportunities in Northwestern cities like Evanston and Chicago.[8][9] Many residents who had originally hailed from Mount Vernon moved there during this time because they saw opportunity here unlike back home where most families still depended upon agriculture or service work for economic stability[10].
