The city experienced some significant growth during World War II (1939-1945) when many new housing developments were built to house soldiers stationed in nearby Peoria or at Camp Dickerson near Chicago Heights (now known as Glen Park). However, most of these developments subsequently fell into disrepair due to competition from more modern housing developments around Chicago or elsewhere in the Midwest during this time period
