It is the smallest community in Kane County and its only full-time school is Washington Middle School. Alfred Prentice came from nearby Decatur where he had worked for James Wirtz as an agricultural laborer during those early days of industry when Peoria was still a sleepy little village surrounded by open farmland Washington's economy changed dramatically with the opening of Kasper Manufacturing Company headquarters across I-88 from town on November 30th 1915 which led to over 1 million dollars being invested over that 2 year period On May 14th 1917 Jens Jensen married Elsie Hansen at First Presbyterian Church west of town and soon thereafter they took ownership of what would become their first house/apartment complex; later known as Hansen’s Place With World War II raging around them residents turned their attention to creating economic development opportunities within their limits while others evacuated or left for safer havens As KMC grew so did Hansen’s Place becoming one of America’s most popular wartime housing developments housing up to 125 people including 33 families living together in commodious 3 story buildings designed by noted Chicago architect Louis Sullivan with integral gardens extending beyond each unit .POSTWAR HISTORY: After World War II ended many people chose not to return home or move into postwar apartment complexes due to limited housing options available outside metropolitan areas but instead stayed put enjoyed good quality services provided through private managed businesses such as Hansen's Place which continued operation thru Dec 1966 becoming one last vestige remaining from prewar days
