Washington, Illinois is a town in Macon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. The first settler in Washington was Elisha Gray and his family who arrived on October 6, 1818. Washington had a post office from 1824 to 1828. The community was platted by James Laughlin on February 10, 1838 with a population of five residents. On May 20, 1840 Laughlin sold the land to John Fenton and his family for $5 per acre. Fenton renamed the town "Fentonville". In 1861 Union General Abraham Lincoln made an unsuccessful attempt to cross the state line into Illinois through Washington Township in order to rally support for the Civil War effort there. Lincoln's men camped overnight in Washington Township before continuing their march the next day into Macon County. There they discovered that no white person lived there and they were forced to leave without loot or food. Lincoln's army reached Springfield on November 15 and took up temporary quarters there until he left for Vandalia on November 17th with his remaining forces en route to Cairo, Alabama where he would have operations performed under Confederate General Robert Eagan (R-KY) upon reaching that state’s capital city. After failing to southcross Iowa Canal due to low water levels caused by heavy rains which had started earlier that week, General Lincoln’s army marched north through Clinton County towards Warsaw village where he rendezvoused with General Ulysses S Grant’s retreating army – although little damage or Casualties were reported as a result of this march across open country). Upon reaching Warsaw Village approximately two days after starting their retreat - both commands decided not to pursue further as bad news had been received from those around them about pursuing Confederate forces several hundred miles north while Union troops remained masters of all but one county east of Chicago - Confederate General Robert Eagan ordered his horse artillery batteries within cannon range of Union positions at Warsaw Village began shelling general headquarters; these batteries did some minor damage but ultimately failed because it was difficult terrain for them and high ground fire prevented any significant advances being made against the position; however Storer ordered his infantry back over open Creek Road towards home just beyond what is now known as White Rock Cemetery today). This relatively small engagement typified many engagements during Operation Stonegrip which eventually led directly into Battle of Chattanooga six weeks later when Union troops arrived at Kingston Ford within easy rifle range of Confederate Hilltop House
