The city experienced rapid growth during World War II as Douglas MacArthur served as its Mayor and many soldiers were drafted into the military here; however, shortly after peace came through 1945 there was no significant commercial or industrial development until following years when post-war revival began in late 1980s with new energy brought about by numerous high-technology companies such as Apple Inc., International Business Machines Corporation (IBM), Motorola Mobility Holding Company (MMHCo), Intel Corp., McDonald's Corporation (MCD) and others which later spawned other businesses such as Northwestern Mutual Group plc., Ford Motor Company (FORD), Wrigley Field Cubs baseball team, Sears & Roebuck department store chain and others In early 1990s developer Dick Eisner purchased agricultural land adjacent to downtown Washington Township north of I-55 for use primarily for housing projects while he developed an amusement park called Spiritland which opened in 1992 followed by two more shopping malls - One near Michigan Avenue and one near State Street - soon followed by another large apartment complex - Park Plaza Towers - also much later becoming highly sought after office space The current skyline formed around 1990s developers Dick Eisner who redeveloped downtown area including Providence Park along I-355/I-475 corridor east side into " Crystal City" while larger redevelopment continued along State Street between Randolph Road and IW> exit getting underway including first wave of high rise buildings built on former Joliet Steel mills site just southwest corner since then known today mostly for Midtown Tower building located at Walker St NE corner
