Warrenville is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,814 at the 2010 census. Warrenville was platted in 1836 by General William Hull as part of an Indiana Territory purchase from France. The community name may be derived from nearby Waverly (now a suburb of Joliet), which was founded by James K. Polk in 1836 as a military base for US forces during the Mexican-American War. Hull named his town after his friend and business partner Nathaniel Prentice Warren, who had arrived in 1835 to establish a flour mill near Waverly and later became one of Illinois's first mayors. The town quickly developed as a grain export center due to its location on the Mississippi River floodplain and its access to navigable waterways. By 1860, it boasted two churches—one Congregationalist and one Baptist—a schoolhouse and three stores. In 1865, Warrenville incorporated as a village under the terms of an act passed by the Illinois General Assembly that authorized consolidation of rural villages into townships throughout Cook County; this action created much resentment among local farmers who felt they were being forced out of their homes without proper compensation. Despite this resistance, over time Warrenville grew more prosperous thanks to its growing timber industry and its status as an eastern gateway to Chicago's rapidly developing mills sector. By 1990, however, economic decline had begunto take hold and by 2000 it had fallen behind other similarly sized villages within Cook County such as Skokie or Hoffman Estates in terms of job density and population growth rate; by 2006 it had lost all but 1% of its estimated population while still remaining largely unincorporated with no official government presence whatsoever other than that provided through township services such as water supply, education facilities, law enforcement etc.. Warrenville is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 24,020 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Illinois and the second largest in Lake County. The first settlement of Warrenville was founded by Major General James K. Polk during the American Civil War on August 14, 1861 as Fort Dearborn.[1] The current site of Warrenville was organized as a town on December 12, 1872 when it was named for Colonel Nathan Bedford Warren,[2][3] who had been appointed Collector of Customs for Cook County by President Ulysses S. Grant.[4] On November 30, 1892, the village of Northfield merged with Warrenville to form a single municipality which continued to be governed by a board of trustees until January 1, 1959 when responsibility for municipal government passed from the trustees to a City Council composed of Mayor and six council members elected at large.[5] Today, Warrenville is home to over 24000 residents[6][7][8], making it one of Illinois' most populous cities. The economy ofWarrenville focuses on manufacturing and food processing industries; however, there are also several thousand jobs in services such as health care and retail trade. In addition to its downtown core which has been designated as a "Center City" designation by the Chicago Department Of Architecture And Planning,[9]Warrenville has several neighborhoods including: Midtown West (a shopping district located near Interstate 94), Downtown East (the heart of the city), Midtown South (an affluent residential area adjacent to Grant Park), Garden District (which includes many historic homes dating back to before World War II), and Hyde Park/Lincoln Park/MacDonald Park (an area along Michigan Avenue that contains many public parks).
Warrenville was founded on February 17, 1847, by Capt. John Warren and his men from the United States militia. The town was named for General Nathaniel Banks, who had helped lead American forces in the Mexican-American War. In 1861, the town became part of the newly created county of Kane County. On January 1, 1871, Warrenville incorporated as a city. The population of Warrenville increased rapidly during the early years of cityhood, reaching 100 residents by 1870. However, World War I slowed down development in Warrenville; by 1919 the population had decreased to around fifty residents. After the war ended in 1918, there was a increase inresidential housing developments throughout Kane County as people returned to their homes after serving in World War I. In 1929–30 Mayor Harry Kapp set out to improve public services within the city limits; he implemented new recycling programs and began use of street lights at night instead of relying on candles or kerosene lamps
