Warrenville, IL is a city located in the far southern end of the state of Illinois. The population as of 2010 was 31,000 people and it is the second largest city in Warren County. The area that now makes up Warrenville was first settled by European settlers in 1836. At that time, most of what is now Warren County was part of larger Bloomington Township. In 1847, Bloomington Township split into two separate townships; one named for General David Dixon and one named for Colonel Amos Kendall. In 1849, those two townships were combined to form Warren County. It wasn’t until 1861 that the county seat moved from Bloomington to Warrenville when the legislature granted its request. In 1907, a gun swivel manufacturing company called Winchester Manufacturing Company was founded in Warrenville by immigrant John Wesson and his brother-in-law George Peake. In 1887, GeorgeWarrenville passed away and his son, William Warrenville took over the business. In 1932, William Warrenville donated an old rifle stock to the local gun museum in Warrenville. This gave the museum the opportunity to study and preserve firearms from Illinois's past. The name Warrenville originated from the fact that General James K. Polk had his Headquarters here in 1849 during the Mexican-American War. The city was incorporated on December 5, 1875. The first post office in Warrenville was established on November 3, 1847 by George Washington Hecker and mailed to Bloomington with a package containing goods brought overland by mail from Mount Vernon. On July 6, 1850, the town received its charter from the Illinois General Assembly and became an official community under its own government with a mayor and three trustees. On November 3 of that year, Ezra Stiles Postmaster general delivered to Mr. Hecker's house a letter announcing that the Government House had been burned down by troops of General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna while he was leading his army through Springfield to attack Chicago; as a consequence of this destruction (the second such fire within one week) Mr. Hecker donated all his mailing supplies which had come into use since he started receiving them four years earlier to be used for building up this new post office - "Ezra Stiles Post Office" - which remains open today as one of downtown's most popular attractions and shopping destinations In 1892 when it became apparent that large numbers of people were moving into cities throughout Cook County because of improved transportation methods (railroads), Mayor John Surry formed what would become known as "The Warrenville Railroad Company". This company built two tracks linking downtown with small villages located along their route: Industry and Niles Heights/Warrenville respectively In 1909 there were plans for a new Cotton Exchange Building in downtown Warrenville but these never came to fruition because City Hall moved into another building soon afterwards On January 2nd 1926 Mayor John Surry inaugurated what would be known as "The Park Avenue Project" which involved raising money for Gangrene Control Research Laboratories at 191 King Street North which would eventually become Northwestern Memorial Hospital This project led to increased business activity on King Street due in part to concerns about gangrene being spread through disease vectors like rats or mosquitoes
