Warrenville, Illinois was founded in 1847 by Seth Warner and James Caldwell. The first gunsmith in town was General John L. Stephenson, who built a forge and pistol factory on the west side of the river. In 1854, A.T. Smith opened a mercantile store at the corner of Third and State Streets (later called North First Street). Smiths gunsmithing shop was later moved to Seventh Street in downtown Warrenville. In 1907, the United States Post Office moved from its original location at First and Congress Streets to Second Avenue in Warrenville, making it one of the few small towns in Illinois with its own post office. In 1938, whenWarrenville incorporated as a city, it acquired control over its municipal arsenal located on East Main Street. The arsenal became one of the most important arms dealers in town during World War II because it could provide guns to soldiers needed for military service and also sell ammunition to civilians. After the war ended, City Manager Thayer Hinshaw decided that there were no more need for armories or police departments within city limits so they were closed down and sold off to other businesses or used as storage facilities until they were finally demolished in 1980-1981. Today only a single remnant of this once powerful armory remains standing - an old brick garage across from City Hall which is currently being renovated into apartments/residence units
