Warrenville was founded in 1885 by John H. Warren and his wife, Nellie. The town was named for the Battle of Bunker Hill which occurred on April 17, 1775. In 1898, the Gadsden Arsenal located in Warrenville opened and began production of artillery shells. Ammunition production continued until 1906 when a new plant was built to produce rifles and handguns. After World War I, the armaments industry slowed due to technological advancements but resumed after World War II with the advent of jet aircraft and nuclear weapons. Today, Warrenville is home to the American Red Cross Gun Laser Training Center as well as a number of other businesses that support gun laser training. The economy has been strong since 2000 and unemployment rates are below average.

In 2003, Warrenville became one of seventy villages across America that were designated for revitalization through economic development grants administered byurban renewal organizations such as Dole Food Company, Sears Holdings Corporation, Monsanto Company, Wernicke Krantz Glass Works and more. Today, Warrenville operates as a retail center with anchor stores like Sears Holdings Corporation (Sears) and JCPenney (JCPenney), while also providing services such as ambulance service, water treatment and city government functions such as zoning/land use regulation and building permits
Warrenville was founded in 1836 by Captain Johnathan Henshaw and his wife Susan. The town became an important stop on the Underground Railroad, helping fugitive slaves escape to freedom. In 1847, Warrenville became the capital of Illinois.
