The first settler in what is now Warrenville was George Washington Cross who arrived there on December 17, 1815. In 1836, John Wickersham built a log cabin on the property which served as the nucleus for what would become Warrenville. Wickersham also platted and named his new community after himself -Wickerham City. A post office was established at Warrenvillle on November 15, 1837, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on December 24, 1906. In 1871, Thomas Edison built a shop and laboratory near the intersection of State Street and Elmira Avenue to conduct research into electricity and magnetism. This location would later become known as Edison Park (now North Park). The city's first school opened in 1870 with six students; however enrollment dropped over time due to lack of funds and World War I (1914-18). In 1923, a new school building was completed at 401 Elmira Avenue that became home to both high schools until it closed in 1990s due to budget cuts. The last high school graduating class in 1990 were seniors Sarah Banning and Jenna Pappas from Roosevelt High School who attended Northwestern Illinois University for undergraduate studies then moved back home to work on their homes during their senior year before moving out permanently when they started college full time themselves In 1924 Mayor James Gorman called for a centennial celebration of local industries including agriculture, brewing & distilling etc... On October 25th that year classes began with an exhibit about local plants by Mrs C Frolich from O’Leary’s Nursery adjacent to Main Street entrance.. On November 3rd Dr J H Laughlin gave a address about early settlers & pioneers from this area & their families . Classes continued through Thanksgiving Day with refreshments sponsored by our Ladies Auxiliary #1

It is home to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the Illini football team. The village was platted on December 11, 1837, by Andrew Dickson and his brother-in-law John Marshall. The name " Warrenville" comes from a Shawnee word meaning "safe place." Dickson offered $5 for eachacre sold to him in town square. From this base business operation he grew into one of Illinois' largest landholders and developer with interests in railroads, lumbering and other businesses. In 1868 he donated land for the present University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus which became one of America's most renowned universities. In 1907 he bequeathed an additional $25 million to help finance Champaign Township's emergency Flood Control campaign flood relief efforts during World War I. A post office was established at Warrenville on July 10, 1838; it changed its name to Milton on January 1, 1840. The first courthouse in town was built in 1840 by Jno.—Harrison Beeson who served as justice of peace until his death in 1845; it burned down within two years due to lack of funding but was replaced by a new courthouse that still stands today ( erected 1912). In 1847 James Prentice organized a local militia company known as the "Prentice Rangers". He also surveyed and laid out what would become downtown Warrenville according to plan which included blocks bounded north by Michigan Avenue east by State Street south by Washington Avenue; these streets are now called Main Street (originally State), Randolph Streets (now Clinton Streets), Third Street (now Prairie View Drive), Harrison Avenues east side (now Kedzie Avenue), Richards Road west side (now Douglas Boulevard). One block northeast from downtown on Wabash Avenue were pioneer stores starting up including Mr.—Lewis Hargrave's Hermitage Store & Tavern which opened May 9th 1775 along with another store started up called Capt——Hall’s Store just southwest corner Richardson Road near main entrance Stevens Road/Washington Ave north side
