The community was named for General James Warren who fought in the Mexican-American War. Warrenville is near Carbondale andNormal, two of the most populated cities in Illinois. The first settler in Warrenville was James Gamble who arrived in 1837. He married Ann Pearsall and moved to what is now the east side of town. In 1841, John Aiken settled on a farm that still stands today on the corner of Third and Elm Streets. In 1846, Jno Bates came to Warrenville and built a log cabin on the bluff overlooking Main Street. By 1870, there were twelve homes in the community with a total population of seventy-four people. In 1865, General Wm Hays arrived at Warrenville from Peoria to establish a military post hereabouts which he called Fort Hays. The post served as an important staging point for troops during both World Wars I and II; it also played an important role in enabling farmers to get supplies into their towns without having them delivered by wagon train or railhead. After World War II ended, Fort Hays closed down and its functions were consolidated into nearby Carbondale’s Army Air Forces Base (now Wright-Patterson Air Force Base). By 1970, only one home remained standing within the original village boundaries: that of Mrs. Gertrude Weisbach from Griggs Township (now Charlevoix Township). Warrenville residents have enjoyed many things over time such as summer concerts held at local high school stadiums; fishing tournaments staged annually aroundJuly 4th; water skiing events throughout late winter/early spring; art exhibitions staged throughout fall/winter months including several Heritage Festivalivals such as international table tennis championships & world music festivals ; country music performances by major artists duringSpringtime weekends; golf tournaments duringFalltime weekends; Illini football games scheduled every other Saturday afternoon since 1966 etc.; but perhaps their favorite annual event has been “Faire” which takes place each year on Veterans Day weekend which features various arts & crafts exhibitorships along withlive entertainment by local orchestras & Ballet Theater companies etc., making this little known agricultural center one ofthe most vibrant communities within McLean County

Today, there are over 1200 residents living in Warrenville and it continues to experience robust growth ranging from businesses to single family homes.
