By 1902, Warrenville had become an incorporated city. In 1915, Warrenville became one of eight communities within a new urban area that was created by Plano Corporation when it bought all of Kane County. The city annexed parts of Plainfield and Aurora Township in 1922 and 1924 respectively. In 1930, General Motors built its huge car plant on land that had been donated by John Daley for that purpose; this made Warrenville one of GM's largest manufacturing locations outside North America.GM moved out in 1969 but kept some plants here such as Cadillac/Chrysler and Buick/Rochester (now Opel). However production stopped completely around 1990 because of competition from Japanese automakers who had larger factories in Mexico and China overall. Today much economic activity takes place through services such as retail sales, health care, government services such as law enforcement and firefighting etc.; however heavy industry still remains with GM's old plant continuing to produce cars until recently while other plants have closed down or been converted into housing developments etc..

The town began as a small farming community with about 40 people in 1834. In 1836, Warrenville become a village and soon had a library, schoolhouse, and other public buildings. In 1854, the railroad arrived and quickly changed the economy of Warrenville. With new jobs coming from the railsroads, businesses started to grow and people moved into the townsite. In 1865, Warrenville became an incorporated city with its own police department and mayoralty. By 1920, when it merged with neighboring West Aurora to form Aurora Township (now Elgin), Warrenville had reached its high point as one of Illinois' most thriving communities."
