Villa Park, Illinois is a city in Will County, Illinois, United States. The population was 27,362 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Will County and the county seat of Cook County. Villa Park covers an area of 39 square miles (111 square km). The town was founded by German immigrants in 1836 as a small settlement on the banks of the Chicago River. It grew rapidly during its early years as a result of its location near one of the great transportation hubs in North America and its close proximity to other major cities. In 1854, Villa Park became a full municipality under the name of Chicago Heights. In 1868, it became part of the newly created City of Chicago; Villa Park remained borough territory until 1959. In 1907, fire destroyed most of downtownChicago and Villa Park was forced to take up residence within walking distance only of their now homesite on South Wacker Drive. This situation continued until 1961 when they were granted their own municipality with all their current boundaries intact - this brought much rejoicing by residents who had been successfully petitioning for years for such change! During World War II, many families chose to flee Nazi Germany and move into Villa Park due to its strategic location on two busy commercial streets: Clark Street and State Street (now Kenmore Avenue). The Villa Park, Illinois community was founded in 1859 by Captain George Stephenson and his wife, Eliza. The original home of the Stephensons was located on the current site of Villa Park Township. The community began to grow when the Stephenson brothers formed a lumber company in 1860 and began selling logs from their sawmill on the nearby Elk River. By 1870, Villa Park had a population of around 100 people and two schools. In 1872, Captain Stephenson's son-in-law, John Minton, purchased land in what is now Villa Park Township and built a gristmill there. By 1880, Minton had acquired additional land for his mill and by 1890 had developed it into a town with a population of around 1,000 people. In 1911, Colonel Arthur Ashe bought 4 miles (6 km) of road north of Villa Park from General Electric Company for $1 million. This provided impetus for growth within the community as businesses could be established closer to consumers instead of shipping products all the way to Chicago. In 1916–17, villa park became one of 24 towns in Cook County that were consolidated under one government agency – the Department of Commerce – which allowed more opportunities for industry in Village Park while at the same time increasing public access to services such as education and transportation. In 1922–23, captain Stephenson's grandson Harry died during an expedition into Siberia; his widow donated money towards construction of a memorial statue to commemorate her husband's achievements in Russia. After Harry's death, George Stephenson took control of his family's business holdings which gave him an interest in village park until he passed away in 1957. Today much remains unchanged about earlyVillageParktownship: its well-maintained streetscape typical for villages southcentral Illinois; its small but active economy based largely on agriculture; its unique history that has been visited by many visitors over years both professional and amateur alike A number homes dating back to 1859 still stand inside or near Villagespark today including Captains Mill House & Spa building now known as "The Mansion" guest house run by Mrs Stevenson & her Son Harry Jr who inherited it & runs it today along with 3 other buildings also existing withinVillagespark including 2 blacksmiths shops also existing currently running their business out side door next door to post office also 2 chicken coops operating currently
