Villa Park was the home of the Union Pacific Railroad until it was sold to the Chicago Breed in 1904. During World War II, Villa Park played host to several artillery batteries that were used to support the Army's Western Theater of Operations. After the war, Villa Park saw a surge in development as a result of its location within walking distance of Northwestern University and other popular universities. In 1959, Villa Park became home to Theocused Solutions Corporation (TSC) which was one of the first companies to create an electronic sighting system for law enforcement use. TSC later became known as Black & Decker Company and still operates out of Villa Park today. Villa Park is located on a bend in the Fox River, about west of downtown Chicago. The village was organized as a town on November 3, 1873, from parts of Elmhurst and South Elgin townships. It became an incorporated village on December 15, 1909. On January 1, 1998 it merged with neighbouring Burr Ridge to form the new city of Villa Park. The Village of Villa Park was established by Act No. 112 of 1898 which provided for an election to be held on November 3rd for all officers including mayor and assessor-collector; these were then chosen by popular vote cast in open fields near the post office until 1903 when they were moved into houses around Main Street cornering Niles Road (now Elmira Road). On July 12th 1886 John Prentice built what is now known as Prentice House which still stands today adjacent to current day Elmira Road and Vernon Avenue It should be noted that this house may have been built earlier as there are references to it dating back to 1848 in deeds and other writings from that time period

In 1970, Villa Park annexed neighboring Hinsdale Township which had been formed as a result of a merger between Hinsdale Township (then known as Bloomington) and Decatur Township (then called Rockford). Today, Villa Park has total jurisdiction over 3 villages: Bloomington-Hinsdale (including parts of Decatur), Oak Lawn-River Forest (including parts of Maywood), and River Forest-Village Square (including parts of Elmhurst).
