The city has two branches – the main branch runs east-west along State Street while side streets lead to different parts of town including Lincoln Avenue (a short roadway that leads from north to south) and Elmhurst Road (which circles around downtown). One popular attraction within Villa Park is Elmwood Gardens which contains several large homes dating back to 1875 as well as an amusement park built in 1912 that includes a water slide and other rides. The Villa Park community was developed in the early 1800s as a result of land purchases by Colonel Samuel Griggs. The original village consisted of just a few homes and a school. By 1825, the town had grown to include over 50 homes, 10 businesses, and a smallpox hospital. In 1852, the first post office was established in Villa Park. A year later, the first public school opened in Villa Park. Today, Villa Park is one of the most vibrant communities in Illinois with nearly 350 residents living within its boundaries.
