Villa Park is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is bordered to the south by Decatur Township, to the north by Rockford Township, and to the east by Skokie Township. The name Villa Park comes from two places: Villa and Park. Villa means "park" in Italian while Park means "forest". So when USGS surveyed this area in 1871 they called it Village Green because there were only a few trees then. The first settler in Villa Park was John Haggerty who arrived around 1824. He built a cabin on what is now State Street and later he bought property on which he built a home known as “Haggerty”s Grove’s House” according to one source. Another early inhabitant of this area was Samuel Moulton who settled about 1800 near present day Elmhurst Road and Belmont Avenue. A third early settler was Thomas Hitchcock who came overland from Ireland about 1825. The first school in Villa Park was taught by Reverend James Fenton from Scotland during 1836-37 according to one source. In 1840 Mrs Anna Heath founded an all girl school (the first women's high school west of the Potomac) at 5th & Western which continues today as Aurora Central High School - also part of the Chicago Public Schools system. From 1840–1868 Ms Anna Heath taught 3rd grade through 8th grades at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School located at 6th & Western Ave., now known as Stritch Institute for Learning Sciences charter school located adjacent to Pace University In 1865 Dr George Washington Carver became interested in gardening and started a small farm on what is now Manor Drive where he raised chickens, pigs, cows and horses until 1870 when he moved his operation into what is now Village Green Elementary School buildings which are still standing today across Wabash Avenue from Joe's Pizza restaurant long after that business closed down In 1872 Mr John Lennon purchased land adjoining Frank Sinatra's house on Gwinnett Rd for $6,000 making it one of the largest single purchases made in village history up until that time In 1902 Harrison Ford purchased 1/4 acre (or .055 acres) of land just west of Villa Park off Lincoln Highway from Jens Wilhelm Petersen for $5 per acre including title insurance Louis Armstrong Jr.'s family also acquired land northwest of Harry Dean Stanton's home off South Shore Drive between 1959-1960 for $2 per acre . This parcel became Armstrong Air Force Base .
