The Vernon Hills Shooting Club was founded in 1916. The club privileges were first granted to the Vernon Hills Rifle and Pistol Club on October 15th, 1916. At its inception, the Vernon Hills NRA had just been organized and was composed of a few individuals from around town. On November 3rd, 1916 the Vernon Hills Rifle and Pistol Club met to discuss what type of shooting privileges should be given to the new organization. It was decided that target holders would enjoy priority over other shooters when it came to membership so a special meeting was called on December 2nd, 1916 to hammer out details of this arrangement. On January 10th 1917 members of the Vernon Hills NRA met at Mr. Wessels home for their monthly meeting. It was proposed that a pistol range be built adjacent to the Hockaday Schoolhouse which would serve as both an indoor and outdoor range. This proposal passed with only 1 dissenting vote! The handgun range would later become known as “The Woods” due to its location near Woods Road off State Highway 53 in downtown Vernon Hills. In 1922, the gun range became known as “The Armory” due to its then state-of-the-art equipment including a machine shop where targets could be made at lightning speed using metal dies set into anvils while gunfire bellowed overhead! In 1929 Walter Rohn designed and built one of the most popular target holders in history – The Dutch Boy! This model has been used by many clubs across America ever since it hit the market in 1929! By 1941, Target Holder fame had spread throughout North America! Numerous countries have now adopted this unique design – Canada being no exception! The town was founded by John Brown in 1836 as a small farming community on the banks of the Chicago River. The name "Vernon" came from John Brown's older brother, who lived there with his family before moving to Peoria, Illinois. In 1851, Vernon Hills became an incorporated village after it passed a referendum vote to do so by a margin of 1,868 to 283. The first post office was established in 1853 at 116 North Greenbush Avenue; it closed in 1954 because postal service was withdrawn from that area at that time. In 1865-1866, Vernon Hills became home to two weeks' worth of summertime festivities called "Festival Park". These were organized by then-Mayor Nicholas Murray Butler and were intended as an event designed to show off Vernon's new city hall and other amenities which had recently been brought over from downtown Chicago. One feature of Festival Park that still remains today is its large pond where people could sit and have their picnics while enjoying music played outdoors on giant steel drums obtained through donations from local businesses or purchased outright from vendors such as Jethro Tull frontman Ian Anderson (whose father had owned land adjacent to Festival Park). This event continued until around 1920 when Groundskeeper's Motel replaced the original City Hall as the official City Hall complex for all villages within Cook County - including Vernon Hills. The first school opened in Vernon Hills on May 20th 1870 at 121 South Greenbush Avenue under instruction from Drs Samuel Silliman and Alfred Stroudman who were both teachers living in nearby Englewood Cliffs Village School District No 514 at that time. A second school opened on December 3rd 1870 under instruction from Mrs Jane Ewing at 114 South Greenbush Avenue also serving students from Englewood Cliffs Village School District No 514 until her death on October 25th 1915 due to natural causes only months later! That same year Rev Edward Hickey converted what would become First Congregational Church into what became known simply as “Hickey’s” where services continue uninterrupted day & night even during winter weather conditions!
