Vernon Hills is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 24,824 at the 2010 census. The first settlement in what is now Vernon Hills was made on February 14, 1853 by John C. Dearborn and his family from Michigan Township in LaSalle County. In 1871, the first post office was established in Vernon Hills with John Payson as its first supervisor. In 1875, Jens Christensen opened a store in what is now Downer Grove Village for Sears & Roebuckshops chain stores across the street from his parents' store operated by John Payson and his brother Jens Christensen until it moved to 63rd Street and State Avenue in 1975 when that block became part of the new Town Center development adjacent to McCormick Place airport (now Midway Airport). By 1886, Vernon Hills had a school system which included 26 pupils and four teachers; this system would be replaced by Chicago Public Schools district services beginning in 1896 Coordinated School District No. 1 operation began with three schools – North Central High School (later renamed "Chicago State University" after becoming state funded), Southwestern High School (later renamed "North Western Illinois College") served as an all-girls school before merging into Northwestern Illinois College subsequent to opening of Evanston campus located at present day Roosevelt Road/Cedarwood Drive . In 1907 there were 12 residents; by 1911 there were 30 residents with 7 plumbers; Morris Chilton Jr., proprietor of Business Men's Warehouse Store which lasted until 1923 when he sold it to Higgins Bros.; 3 blacksmiths - Harry Hodge Sr., Harry Hodge Jr., George Washington Howland ran two small shops within walking distance of each other on King Drive known as Harney & Howland ; 2 grocers - Thomas Payne & Sons at 116th Street (now Wicker Park) between Lake Forest avenue and Irving Park avenue ; pump mechanics - Fenton Pumping Co.; Electricians - William Healey & Son; Wojciech Lewandowski ran a grocery at 901 N Mississippi St between Halsted street and Hoyt Ave prior to 1914 when he purchased property along Lake Michigan shoreline extending Dempster eastward into Watertown village name changed to Vernon Hills following purchase of land extending beyond current boundaries northward including backwaters along White water river name changed again following purchase of land including current site west side currently called Roscoe Village

By 1940, Vernon Hills had over 100 businesses and 1,500 residents. During World War II, Vernon Hills served as a pivotal shipping point for munitions shipments between Chicago and Europe. After the war ended, the towns growth slowed as many businesses disbanded or moved away from Vernon Heights because of competition from larger cities. However, Vernon Heights began to develop again after it merged with neighboring Bloomington in 1994.
