Vernon Hills, Illinois is a small town located in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 9,814 at the 2010 census. Vernon Hills is home to the Vernon Hills High School District and two other high schools- Lakeview and Forest View. It also features two parks- Vernon Park and Royal Park. The name "Vernon" originated from English settler John Vernon who arrived in 1824. He named his land after Prince of Wales, George IV's nephew and future King of England, who had died in 1820. In 1829, James Kempton purchased 1/2 mile of what is now the north side of Prospect Avenue from John Vernon for $5 per acre. At that time it was one of the most prestigious addresses in village because it fronted on an open field that could be used for farming or grazing animals including horses and cattle. By 1860, most of what is now Vernon Heights had been developed as part of Chicago's rapidly growing northwestern section known as Near West Side (NW Side). In 1903, when Chicago annexed much of Northwest Indiana (now DeKalb County), Vernon Hills became part of the newly formed city limits along with 175 other villages within Chicago's boundaries. At this time there were only a few buildings left standing in the original village center which had been replaced by a large parkland area flanked by busy streets with modern housing developments on both sides-. By 1920 all but one building within Village Limits had been demolished or replaced by new structures constructed within City Limits- making it one of the last majorvillages to disappear entirely during Chicagos early 20th century growth boom

By 1925, the population of Vernon Hills had risen to over 100 people, and by 1930, it had reached 200. In 1937, Vernon Hills became one of the first neighborhoods in Chicago to be served by its own water system. During the late 1940s and early 1950s, many businesses moved out of Vernon Hills due to competition from other areas in the city. However, during this time period there was also an increase in construction activity in Vernon Hills due to new housing developments being built throughout the city. This led to increased traffic congestion on Glenbrook Avenue which caused some residents to begin protesting against this trend. Despite these challenges, over the years there has been an increasing amount of effort made by community members to maintain and improve their neighborhoods. This has included initiatives such as working with local government officials to create policies that help promote good public health and safety within their communities; creating initiatives that encourage physical activity within their neighborhoods; and helping Topps-Parker baseball diamonds become more popular among local children
