In recent years, Vernon Hills has seen significant growth thanks to its many successful businesses and its location within close proximity to two major airports – Chicago O'Hare International Airport (IATA: CHI) and Chicago Midway Airport (ICAO: IAPM). These growing industries have led to an increase in job opportunities for both locals and non-local workers alike; this has drawn people from all over Illinois into Vernon Hills for work or study purposes. The Vernon Hills neighborhood in Glen Ellyn, Illinois is famous for its large number of millionaires, and for the fact that it was one of the earliest areas in the country to be developed as a suburb. The area was first settled by German immigrants in the early 1800s, and by 1840 there were over 100 families living in Vernon Hills. By 1860, there were over 1,000 people living in Vernon Hills. In 1881, Vernon Hills became a village, and in 1916 it became a city. Today, Vernon Hills is home to over 50% of the population of Glen Ellyn. The development of Vernon Hills began with two main goals: to provide an affordable place for workers who needed to commute into nearby Chicago or other cities, and to create a new community where middle-class Americans could live without having to worry about transportation costs. The city fathers realized that they would need more than just expensive housing developments when they started looking for land for their new city; they needed businesses too. They found some great opportunities when they met proponents of developing what would become known as “the Loop” – a network of streets surrounding Lake Michigan that served as both business districts and tax rolls for many different businesses. One such proponent was George Stephenson – son of Sir John Stephenson who had built Liverpool docks – who convinced his city fathers that developing this area would make sense because it would provide plenty of jobs for merchants and laborers alike. And so it did; within five years of coming up with the idea, much manufacturing had moved from Liverpool into Glen Ellyn thanks to Stephenson’s efforts. One important part of this growth was the addition of streetcar lines which allowed residents access to all parts of town quickly and easily (and which made getting around town much easier than if people had walked). Additionally, schools were built soon after becoming available on property adjoining modern streetscape elements like bike lanes and playgrounds which have become integral components in today’s community fabric. Even though these decisions likely resulted in lower average prices per square foot due to competition from other areas across America at this time (which only grew significantly later), these institutions remain somearguably Glen Ellyn’s most iconic assets today given their long association with the neighborhood including hosting annual events like Highland Days Parade every July 4th weekend since 1903!
The Vernon Hills community was founded in 1892. The name, Vernon Hills, is based on the family name of the early settlers. The first post office in Vernon Hills was established in 1893. In 1907, Vernon Hills became a village. On November 3, 1957, Vernon Hills became a city.
