Vernon Hills is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 51,813 at the 2010 census. Vernon Hills is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Vernon Hills was founded in 1892 as a Pullman Township and became a city in 1955. The name Vernon Hill comes from nearby Mount Vernon Township which was named for George Washington and his family. The first settler in what would become Vernon Hills was John Pritchard who arrived on October 26, 1892. He built a cabin on the right hand side of town line between Mount Pleasant Township to the south and Park Forest Township to the north. In 1897, James Brouncker settled in what would become Vernon Hills after arriving from Pennsylvania with his wife and two children. His farm became known as Brouncker Farms until it was annexed by Vernon Hills in 1905. The first school building in what would become Vernon Hills was erected on the corner of Maple Road and Racine Avenue in 1893 by Lewis Schlosser Jr., one of the early settlers of that community. It served as an elementary school until 1916 when it became an addition to House #4 on State Street which had been constructed as part of a larger development called "Lake Shore Drive". That same year saw the opening of Lake Shore Drive Elementary School which remained operational until 1957 when it merged into House #1 on State Street which also served as its new school building until 1980 when it became embroiled in litigation that led to its demolition; however, portions were preserved and are now used for private functions such as weddings and baby showers/birthing ceremonies (See Lake Shore Drive Elementary School photo gallery). A second school building - House #5 - opened at this location on May 3, 1895 by Mrs. Julia Auerbach under contract with Mr.(later Mr.) Julius Rosenwald who had purchased land adjacent to present-day Union Depot along present day Milwaukee Avenue just east of downtown Chicago (). This house continued serving students through high school level until 1918 when all schools within Chicago's limits were consolidated into one large district under control of Mayor Hahn (See Jane Addams High School photo gallery). It should be noted that due to political affiliation reasons both Houses 5 & 6 (the original brick buildings) remain extant today while all other Buildings within City Limits including Wacker Housing Authority have been destroyed or replaced over time! In 1916 Drs./Drs./Mrss.(later Mrs.) Alice Robertsopened North Side Hospital located at 4646 S LaSalle Ave., later renamed Alice Roberts Medical Center after her late husband who owned property neighboring hospital lot giving rise to later nickname "Hospital Row" .....House number 5 still stands today.......!
