Vernon Hills is a small city in the U.S. state of Illinois, on the border of Lake Michigan and Indiana. The population was 21,883 at the 2000 census. Vernon Hills is one of Chicagoland's oldest communities and has been inhabited by natives since 1836 when it was organized as a town under the name of Bellefontaine. It adopted its present name in honor of General James K. Polk who served as President of the United States from 1844 to 1853 and who was buried there in 1898 when Bellefontaine merged with nearby Park Ridge to form what is now Vernon Hills. The community took off during World War II, when it became home to three production plants for Ford Motor Company products: Dearborn Heights, Midland Township and Oak Lawn Township; also, Iveco Truck Manufacturing Company which produced heavy trucks until its closure in 1984. In spite of this output, few residents remained within the original town boundaries; instead they relocated to more recent developments such as Northfield Village ( bounded by State Street on the north side and Elmhurst Avenue on the south side), Arlington Heights/ Schaumburg/ Lincolnwood ( bounded by Western Avenue on one side and Racine Avenue on another), Orchard Park (bounded by Cicero Avenue and Mayfair Road), Glenview Park (bounded by Foster Road on one side and Holyoke Road on another) and Hoffman Estates ( bounded by Laramie Boulevard on one side and Cook County lines - West Side Highway or South Side Highway - east side). One result has been that Vernon Hills functions largely as a bedroom community for greater Chicago – although some merchants still maintain storefronts in central business districts such as Jeffrey Place or Willowbrook Center because customers find them convenient for shopping before or after work meetings at these locations or for evening events at other venues around town like Stritch's Irish Pub or Pianos After Dark . The commerce sector continues to be an important engine for Vernon Hills’ economy with many businesses located along Allerton Road just outside its borders including restaurants such as Zangrando's Italian Grill & Pizza/(formerly Big Tony's Pizza) which opened in 2003 followed by Joe's Pizza(now defunct) next door then Olive Garden next door all closed down within a year each while several others have moved out into surrounding neighborhoods since then making it difficult to determine how much retail space remains within Vernon Hills proper despite claims otherwise from local officials There are two schools located here viz., Edward J Fenton High School- which serves grades 9-12 Eastman Middle School- which serves grades 7-8

They built small cabins along the banks of the Des Plaines River until they could found a more permanent home closer to town so they could trade their goods with other residents and businesses. The first store opened its doors on October 20th, 1868 on Dearborn Street just south ofpresent-day Lincoln Park neighborhood (now Roscoe Village). By 1870, there were five stores in Vernon Heights; two Auction Halls and three mercantile yards serving customers coming from as far west as Aurora and nearby Elk Grove Village. In 1875 local businessman Julius Rosenwald organized a group of businessmen led by George Pullman to purchase 2 million acres (8 km2) southeast of Chicago for $15 million dollars which would become known as "The Forest Preserve". This land would be devoted to creating nature reserves that would house timberlands, gardens, reservoirs etc., which would provide jobs for people within miles of downtown Chicago while also providing much needed revenue for the forest preserve’s coffers This purchase marked a turning point for riverfront development around downtownChicago because it allowed property developers access not only to valuable waterfront properties but also sites located east and northeast of Michigan Avenue making it easy to buildtall buildings on prime real estate close enoughto retail shopsand mass transportation
