Vernon Hills is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 30,724 at the 2010 census. Vernon Hills was founded in 1892 and named for General John A. Vernon, an eighteenth-century American general and a veteran of the Mexican–American War who served as military governor of Texas during the war. The original town site was located on a bend in the River Des Plaines just east of present-day Arlington Heights. The first settlers were farmers who arrived from New England in 1841 and built cabins near what is now the north side of US Highway 44. By 1865, when the railroad reached Vernon Hills, about 60% of its residents were farmers with others commuting to jobs in Chicago or other nearby towns. In 1892, developers led by J. Prentice Hall bought land on what is now south side of I-88 west of Arlington Heights and began to build homes into the early 20th century. They named their new community for General John A. Vernon because he had helped lead American participation in Mexico's War of Independence (1848–50). In 1919, Vernon Hills became one of three towns located within newly created Cook County; it remained an unincorporated village until 1954 when it became part of the larger city of Chicago proper according to its boundaries then as they are today.
