Tinley Park is a small city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 815 at the 2010 census. Tinley Park is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Tinley Park was settled by French Canadians in the 18th century. It became a village in 1871 and its name was changed to Tinley Park in 1907 after Amos Tinley, an early settler and Congressman from Illinois. The village had a population of 1,451 in 1920 and 2,014 in 1930; it declined to 914 people as of the 2000 census. The Village of Tinley Park merged with the City of Evanston on December 1, 2002. As a result of this merger, Evanston lost its status as a separate municipality while Tinley Park gained it. On March 15, 2006, Mayor Richard M. Daley announced that he would not seek reelection for another term due to health reasons and would hand authority over all city operations over to his Vice Mayor Rahm Emanuel who would lead them until he returns in 2020 or 2022. Tinley Park was founded in 1847 by John Tinley and is one of the oldest towns in Illinois. The town has a rich history that can be seen in the many businesses, churches, and public institutions that remain today. Tinley Park was originally a small farming community with only two families living on the original site. Today, it has a population of over 30,000 people and is home to several colleges and universities as well as numerous businesses and restaurants. The first inhabitants of Tinley Park were German immigrants who arrived in 1847. Many of these immigrants had come from Hanover County, Germany to work on farms or mine coal. After arriving in America, they started to build homes here. By 1850, there were four families living in Tinley Park: the Potters, Hennesseys, Lincolns, and Smiths. These early settlers built log cabins for their own use and also shared an gristmill which ground flour for local merchants. In 1853, John Tinley bought land adjacent to his parents’ farm near present-day Elmira Road and River Road for $1 per acre. This purchase created what would become Tinley Park Village. In 1854, he organized a township board of directors which consisted of twelve men from different farming villages within the Township of Cook County (now Chicago). tinleys initial investment allowed him to create a commercial center at his property which attracted other farmers to start their own businesses around him including farmer JnoLF Weiser who opened the first grocery store west of the Mississippi River in 1862 at 111th Street & State St., now known as Weiser's Bakery (later expand into other stores). In 1865 John Tinley married Rachel Fenton who had been born in Decatur County,, Illinois on February 3rd, 1824 daughter of Coleridge Fenton Sr., Judge Advocate General for Jackson county (1812-1892). They moved to TinLEY Park where he erected a frame home on lot No 4 ($4 per acre) – this became known as “The House With The Attic” – which still stands today within walking distance from most Of The Village buildings! Rachel tinney died at age 83 years old on October 8th 1948 after battling cancer since 1951; she is buried next door at Elmira Cemetery #2
