It is bordered by the city of Chicago to the south and west, Orland Park to the north and east, and La Grange Township to the northeast. The first settler in Tinley Park was George Wiseman in 1837. Wiseman moved from Maryland with his family and began farming land that he would later name "Wiseman's Grove". The first post office in Tinley Park was established in 1847. In 1856, tin mines were discovered on what is now Route 62 near present-day Elmhurst Avenue; this led to the development of Tinley Park as a mining town. The first store in Tinley Park was built on State Street in 1865 by Nelsons brothers Isaac and John Nelson. In 1870, Abraham Lincoln laid out a township on what is now Elmhurst Avenue for his own convenience while he served as President of the United States; it became one of 17 townships created during the great Americaization movement of the early 19th century. That same year saw an influx of Irish immigrants when a smallpox pandemic struck Ireland; many people decided to move to Tinley Park due to its lack of disease activity. From 1870–1875, there were over 1,000 Irish immigrants living here permanently according to records kept bythe American Immigration Museum (AIM). In 1875, James Fenton organized a company that developed corn oil into commercially viable products which led directly to Richardson's Corn Refinery being founded just down Elmhurst Avenue from where today's BMO Harris Bank building stands (now One Plaza Centre). This refinery produced both gasoline and diesel fuel until it closed its doors in 1984 following heavy economic decline throughout Illinois due primarily to increases elsewhere such as natural gas prices caused by OPEC nations' production hikes since 1973). For much of its history Richardson's bore brunt criticism for gouging motorists with exorbitant rates for fuel they could produce themselves at home cheaper than at Richardson's refinery; however it has come back into vogue recently as an interesting historical curiosity dealers sometimes try sell items related thereto like buttons or license plates made from old pipeline paper used during refining days) On July 4th 1907 residents held their annual fireworks show across all three streets leading up Main Street including Elmhurst Ave., just outside City limits; festivities continued all night long along main thoroughfare with bonfires lighting up night sky
