The first Europeans to visit Taylorville were French traders in 1764 and they named it "Ville de la Prairie." In 1820, theeta Indian tribe bought land near present-day Taylorville from the French for $5 per acre. They built their own village there and called it "Kanawa." In 1830, General James K. Polk established Fort Dearborn here as a base for Operation Pike (the invasion of Mexico). On October 15, 1835, General John A. Logan's Union army surrendered at this site after an eight-day battle that ended with about 4 Mexican casualties and 10 Americans dead or wounded. The fort served as a training ground for future American military leaders until its closure in 1906. On July 12, 1860, following the Kansas–Nebraska Act of Nebraska becoming law, residents of McLean County voted 3-1 to secede from Missouri into what would become Illinois; Taylorville was one of these towns. In 1861–1862 Confederate forces attacked Union troops at this location while they were besieging Fort Donelson in Tennessee; no American fatalities resulted but around 60 Confederate soldiers were killed or captured including some who took refuge inside the fort walls. It was not until 1865 when General William Tecumseh Sherman's army came through Springfield into McLean County that Union troops finally breached the fortifications on July 9th and began attacking inside: within two hours 5 men had been killed while 23 others were taken prisoner including one officer who later died from his wounds at Parkersburg Hospital (now University Hospital). This event is generally considered to be the beginning of World War II in America because much of Sherman's army passed through here en route to Battle Creek where more than 20% of all US combat deaths during that war occurred
