Taylorville is a small town in Illinois, United States. It is located in the east central part of the state. The population was 1,523 at the 2010 census. Taylorville was platted in 1855 by General John Taylor and his wife, Sarah Lyon. The name honors General Taylor's role in the American Civil War and for his leadership during that conflict. The original Townsite plat included one-mile square blocks which were to be developed into a village center with shops, churches, schools, and other essential services for residents. However, development never took place because of lack of support from local officials or investors. In 1907, the town fathers petitioned the Illinois State legislature to establish a school district within their borders and receive government funding for that purpose; however no action was taken until 1916 when it was finally granted on condition that the school board use its own funds for instruction instead of using public money to build new schools. In 1923–24 the state legislature allocated $10,000 towards building two high schools but again no action was taken until 1933 when Governor George Romney directed then-Governor Alonzo Mourning (D) to provide assistance to Taylorville because "the community had been neglected." The first high school opened in 1934 and continued operation until 1958 when it became known as Eastern Illinois High School; it later became Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIU Carbondale). In 1967 SIU Carbondale erected a new brick building which served as both an administrative headquarters and classrooms for all three schools—High School (later renamed after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.), Engineering High School (now known as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville), and physics/math/computer science Center (now known as Northwestern Illinois University Edwardsville). On November 16th 1978 Jean Charles Smith Sr., president of SIUEF awarded Hallam Hillebrandt with an honorary degree for her contributions to education at SIUEF including working on erection of Administration Building On January 3rd 1984 President Ronald Reagan dedicated First Liberty Bank & Trust Building which housed Third Street Community Bank across from Central Park across from Main Street which would become home to Harper’s Bazaar starting February 14th 1984 until October 15th 1997 when they moved back into their current location on Wilson Boulevard just outside downtown Clinton Township

Taylorville was founded in 1837 by the James brothers. It became a town in 1848 and was named for John Taylor, one of the original settlers. The town had a population of about 500 people when it became a city in 1907. The first store in Taylorville opened in 1837 and was called the "Old Store." It was located on the north side of High Street. In 1840, the James brothers built a log cabin on what is now First Avenue. They named their cabin "Taylorville" after John Taylor, one of their original settlers. In 1850, an oil well was drilled in nearby Carbondale and began to produce gas. The town started to get its name from this gas production. The first store built with natural gas lighting opened in Carbondale in 1895. For many years, Carbondale was the only city with this type of lighting. In 1907, because of World War I, Taylorville became a city due to its location on Lake Michigan Boulevard between US-16 and US-40s eastward travel artery during that time period
The town of Taylorville was founded by German immigrants in 1836. It became a settlement on the east bank of the river Fox River, which flows through the town. The first school was built in 1840. In 1847, a post office was established here. In 1865, the population of Taylorville was 1,500. By 1870, it had grown to 5,000 people. The town prospered until World War II when it lost its status as an agricultural community and became a manufacturing center for war materials and munitions production.
