Taylorville, Illinois is a small town in McLean County, Illinois. The population was 5,527 at the 2010 census. It lies on the east bank of the Kankakee River. The first settler in Taylorville was John Palfrey, who arrived around 1800. He named his place "Kankakee". James Hanks and others laid out a town in 1836, but it never grew much larger than a few hundred people. In 1839-1840, one thousand acres (402 hectares) of land near present-day Taylorville were bought by Nathan Bedford Forrest from John Palfrey for $4,000. The new settlers started to build cabins and farms there. In 1840-1841, another group of about sixty settlers moved to Taylorville from Bloomington (then called Bloomington Heights). They named their settlement "Fenton" after General Nathan Bedford Forrest's older brother Ebenezer Fenton. In 1846-1847 two more groups of about seventy settlers moved to Taylorville from Moline; these were called the "Moses Lake" group because they had heard that Moses Lake had good water supplies. The first post office in Taylorville was established on November 1, 1850; it continued serving until 1893. In 1865 an express company ran through town transporting goods upriver; the company's depot remain standing to this day as part of downtown Taylorville's commercial district. The local school system began operation in 1870; it continues today as Moultrie Township Schools District #2A School District with students grades PreK - 8th grade inclusive. In 1907 President Grover Cleveland announced plans for built a new dam across the Kankakee River just upstream from present day Taylorvilie so that Chicago could generate electricity using runners running downriver to bring power back ashore for use elsewhere in the city or even abroad! However these plans never came to fruition due to funding issues and other priorities during those years! On October 26th 1909 residents of neighboring towns Dodge City and Terre Haute voted 3 – 1 not to annex into their village; this vote represented a large backlash against what many felt was rampant disorganization among both dodge CITY & TERRE HAUTE leaders at that time (& still doesoccasionally occur). From then until annexation by Terre Haute on February 26th 1959 all decisions made within our village were made collectively thru elected officials including Mayor George Beaumont & Chairman Homer Smith (of course!). This gave us our current name “Taylorvillians”

On January 1, 1811, Taylorville was incorporated as a village. The first store was built on the present site of the current library in 1814. The village had a population of about 100 people by 1800. In 1834, it became a town and had a population of about 1,500. It lost its town status in 1925 and has since been an agricultural village with about 150 residents.
