Taylorville is a city in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 24,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kane County. The community was founded by John Taylor in 1827 on the site of an existing log cabin. He named it after his father-in-law, Samuel Tiffin. The first post office in Taylorville was established in 1830 and remained open until 1847. During the years 1837 to 1840, Daniel Boone passed through Taylorville on his way from Kentucky to found Springfield Township and then to Cincinnati, Ohio; he stopped at a cabin near present-day Carbondale for refreshment on his journey. In 1851, after acquiring land adjacent to what is now downtown Taylorville (the town's original location), James Kapp organized the towns of Carbondale and Kappstown into one municipality under the name "Taylorville". In 1857, during construction of the Union Pacific Railroad across Kane County, residents petitioned Congress for a railroad station within their town limits; this request was granted and Carbondale became the first railway town in Illinois. In 1861 when Union Army troops attacked Springfieldtown while retreating from Fort Donelson following its victory over Confederate forces at First Bull Run Campaign, General Ulysses S. Grant ordered all trains eastbound through Carbondale instead of continuing on downriver as planned because there were fears that large numbers of Confederate soldiers would attempt to block supplies reaching General Sherman's army marching towards Atlantaboro Landing (present day Columbus). This event is often cited as being one of the reasons why Carbondale declined during Reconstruction and lost much industry and jobs during that time period*. On December 2nd 1913 Mayor J F Giannini inaugurated new streetlights along US Highway 14 between Third Street and Fourth Street which replaced older metal lights along those streets that had been serving since 1915

Taylorville is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Joliet Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was started in 1851 by Captain Samuel Taylor and his family as a place to raise pigs. In 1861, when Abraham Lincoln was elected president, Taylorville became part of the new state of Illinois and its capital was moved from Springfield to Urbana. The first post office in Taylorville opened in 1859. In 1865, General George Armstrong Custer's army marched through Taylorville on their way to battle against the Sioux Indians near Fort Dearborn. A group of local girls who were walking home from school saw the army coming and ran into their house to hide; they later told historians that they thought thebattle would take place right outside their door. When it didn't happen, they went back inside and asked their father what was going on; he told them there wasn't any battle taking place because General Custer had been turned around by mistake and was heading back home instead. In 1930, during World War II,Taylorville made headlines when four American soldiers were taken prisoner by Japanese forces while garrisoning an airbase just east of town. After weeks of negotiation led by President Franklin D Roosevelt, these prisoners were released unharmed in 1945 and returned to America two years later (although one soldier never fully recovered from his injuries).
