Taylorville was first settled in 1847 by Adam and Abigail Couch. In 1856, a post office was established at the site. The town was named after John Quincy Adams, who served as President of the United States from 1797-1801.

The town was founded in 1871 by John and Lucy Taylor and named for General Ulysses S. Grant. It was first settled on the east side of the Sangamon River where he had a home farmstead which he sold in 1863 to Jno. Hanksworth and Wm. Fenton for $1,500USD In 1868 Jacob Price built a log cabin on what is now State Route 12 near present day Uniontown On July 3rd 1874 James Aiken opened a store at 322 Main Street called "Aiken's" as the first business in what would become Taylorville In 1880 Mrs Lizzie Denny started a grocery store at 414 Main Street called "Denny's", later renamed "The Gables". This building still stands today and has been used as a restaurant since 1978 In 1886 David Haney started another grocery store at 501 N First St., later renamed "Haney's". This building still stands today also as an active business location

Taylorville is a small town in Will County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Taylorville is named for General James Fenton Taylor, who fought in the American Civil War and was brevetted brigadier general after his victory at Gettysburg. The first settler in what would become Taylorville was John Hodge in 1824. Development of the village started with the construction of a one-room schoolhouse on Main Street in 1828 by local farmers and their families. In 1829, a post office was established at Taylorville and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. A store opened on First Street in 1830 and continued to serve as the town's focal point until 1870 when a new courthouse replaced the old building that had been built around 1840. In 1872, county land purchased from Jens Moller accounted for three-quarters of all present-day Taylorville; most of this land had been donated by Moller himself following his death that year from pneumonia brought on by advancing age. With this additional piece of property came increased development opportunities for both men and women as well as an increase population size due to immigration from Europe over the years. By 1900, agricultural production had replaced manufacturing as the primarystay economy of the small town – although industry continues to play an important role today with many businesses based out of downtownTaylorville including two banks (First National Bank and Peoples Trust Company), four restaurants/cafes (Ziggy's Place Café & Grill, Giuseppe's Pizza Place & Pasta House, The Lion's Den), two pharmacies (Otto Foods Co., Inc., First South Country Pharmacy), two high schools (John Fenton High School - now called McDonogh Community College) and several other businesses catering to residents within walking distance or just minutes away via public transportation such as buses or carshare services like Zipcar or UberPooling services like Carpool Karaoke
