Taylorville is a town in Macon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Macon– Kendall County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Taylorville was John Auld who arrived in 1827 and built a cabin on the north side of the river. In 1830, George Packer moved from Pennsylvania to Taylorville and purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of land. He named his land "Packer's Prairie" after himself and his wife Sarah Packer. The first store in Taylorville was opened by JOSEPH WILSON on July 4, 1830. On October 5, 1830, WILLIAM POWELL opened a grocery store at the corner of Center and Eighth Streets. In 1831-32 THOMAS CLARK vied for supremacy with PACKER over stores on Porter's Prairie but lost to PACKER by 1 vote to 9 votes out of 10 cast! In 1833 JOHN POHL established a sawmill on the south side ofthe river which continued operation until 1893 when it was replaced by an electric mill which still stands today. On December 3, 1834 MARY ANN WHITEFIELD married WILLIAM HUGHES at their home northeast of town on Porter's Prairie Creek. Mr Hughes had come across this place from New York state that year during Agricultural Fair in Springfield where he had carried corn for delivery to settlers near Cairo, Illinois Mrs Whitefield also came from Massachusetts where she had been married to James Whitefield (1803-1872) before moving westward with her family in 1825 . They laid down the roots for what would become one of America’s oldest continuous communities – present day Taylorville One important event that took place here occurred just prior to the Civil War when Fenton Robinson (1792-1865), an American Revolutionary War veteran settled hereabouts as early as 1796 .Robinson served as captain or lieutenant colonel under General Anthony Wayne during that conflict and died herein while quartered at Cairo Barracks.. later known as Robinson House It is interesting to note that racially segregated schools were not yet widespread within America so much like many other towns throughout Illinois they were Separate but equal until desegregation began proper across Cook County beginning around 1955
