The Taylorville Rifle Club, Inc., was chartered in 1881 and began meeting at the Masonic lodge on State Street. The first rifle match was held in November 1882 and the club soon became well-known for its top-quality firearms. In 1886, the club moved to a new building on North Avenue. In 1897, the club established a rifle range on property adjacent to the post office. That same year, members created a second rifle range which still exists today on South Side Drive. The 1911 version of the NRA pistol competition featured matches at this location. In 1912, members built a barn and storage buildings near East High School as an armory. The rifles and shotguns stored here were used in numerous NRA tournaments over the years including those staged at nearby Springfield Armory during World War I and World War II. In 1954, this armory was sold to Taylorville Community College which continues to use it today as their shooting center campus’ main gymnasium/range complex! Today, Taylorville Rifle Club is one of America's oldest gun clubs with more than 2200 members who participate in many activities including competitive shooting, trap shooting (with TrapMaster targets), target practice (including 3-gun events), muzzleloading competitions (with historical muzzleloaders), archery (using bows) and paper target Shooting!

The Town of Taylorville was organized in 1847. The first post office was established in 1849. In 1865, the name changed to Taylorville Heights and then to Taylorville after Colonel John Denny who donated land for the town. Taylorville takes its name from General Samuel Taylor who fought with General Ulysses S Grant during the American Civil War and later became an Honorary Citizen of Taylorville. Taylorville is located at (38.560469,-87.827172). According to the 2010 census, it has a total area of , all of it land.

Taylorville was a small town in Butler County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,004 at the 2010 census. It is located on the northern edge of Butler County just east of Carbondale. The first settler in Taylorville was James Henshaw, who arrived in 1837. In 1847, John Riddle founded the village of Whitehall and laid out a square mile (1 km²) around it on what is now State Street. The post office was established at Whitehall in 1850, and one year later the village had a population of 507 inhabitants. In 1861, Taylorville became part of Carbondale Township; by 1870 it had reached 2,000 residents. In 1884-85 Jesse Prentice manufactured shoes for Sears & Roebuck in Chicago; he moved his factory to Taylorville after that company relocated to Hoffman Estates IL in 1886. From 1895 until 1907 the shoe manufacturing operations were run by Fenton Manufacturing Company which also produced radios and other electronics products from 1912 until its closure due to World War I efforts in 1918. During prohibition times (1920- 1933), Prohibition Party members built "bootlegging fronts" near towns like Carbondale and Taylorville to smuggle alcoholic beverages into Illinois without getting caught by law enforcement officials or being taxed accordingly (the bootlegging business was considered very lucrative during this time). What's more is that these Fronts typically used smaller towns as hubs where people would converge from all over rural Butler County looking for liquor stores open late or operating illegally; if such store happened within an hour's drive from any community then it likely acted as a "liquor control point".

The first school in Taylorville was organized in 1836. In 1870, the first post office was established in Taylorville. In 1916, the first telephone service was provided in Taylorville.
