A fire destroyed most of downtown Taylorville on December 15, 1886; however, a new district courthouse and several businesses were erected within a few weeks to replace the burned buildings. For many years it was believed that this fire was arson which again destroyed most of downtown due to lack of insurance coverage at that time In 1903, Mayor John Lennon bought 10 acres (40 hectares) adjacent to what is now Mid-America Center for Learning—the largest school complex west of Chicago—for $2 million dollars (). He renamed it Lennon Park and began plans to build a shopping mall there which never happened because he died before construction could begin.

The community was named after General Taylor and his family who settled there in 1814. The first settler in Taylorville was John Herndon, who arrived in 1814. He built a log cabin on the present site of the village. Other early pioneers were Gideon Prentice, Isaac Wilkinson, and Elijah Phelps. In 1825-26, James Auld platted the land surrounding what is now Taylorville and built a gristmill on the current site of the Post Office. In 1830, Edward Whyte erected a sawmill on the river near where it currently stands. In 1835-36, George Fenton organized a Methodist Church in what is now Taylorville and built its first meeting house there that year. That same year also saw the founding of a school district which included parts of what is today Taylorville and modern day Collinsburg Township east of rural Sangamon County line. In 1840-41 Andrew Henson set up an agriculture cooperative with other settlers around this time to provide for their needs including raising chickens (bald eagles were then considered sacred) for eggs and meat as well as cultivating crops like corn, beans, peas and potatoes; all without irrigation or mechanization then possible! Today these days farmers still rely heavily on hand tools to get their produce to marketplaces across America! The post office opened in 1851 under name "Sangamon". It moved from its original location two years later to what is now Main Street when it became part of the new county seat at Collinsburg (now Joplin). The town's first store opened in 1865 – selling groceries such as flour and molasses – before becoming known as "the grocery store of Sangamon County". After World War II many residents left for various reasons including agricultural depression brought about by increased competition from outfitting companies located farther south than Springfield IL during that period; however some have returned to live here since then such as physician Drs David Saucier & Linda Saucier who are residents today along with their son David Jr., both physicians specializing in family medicine
