The Taylorville Police Department is one of the oldest municipal police departments in Illinois. It was founded on December 12, 1881, when the City of Taylorville incorporated as a village. The department currently has about 350 sworn officers and detectives.
Taylorville is a small town in central Illinois. The population was 4,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Peoria metropolitan area. The name "Taylorville" was given to the community by General James Taylor during his visit in 1824. The village of Taylorville was founded in 1825 by General James Taylor and settlers from Kentucky. In 1830, the first school opened in the village, and later that year, a post office was established. The village grew rapidly due to its location along the Route 66 corridor and its close proximity to other settlements in central Illinois. By 1840, Taylorville had a store, three schools, two churches, and twenty-one residents. In 1851, when Illinois became a state, Taylorville incorporated as a town. The town continued to grow rapidly and by 1860 had a population of 1,500 people. In 1862–1863, during the American Civil War (1861–1865), many residents took up arms against Confederate forces operating in central Illinois. Many citizens were killed or wounded as result of this conflict. After the war ended, many residents returned to their homes in Taylorville and other rural areas of central Illinois. However, some continued to live in downtown Taylorville until after World War II when they moved into new housing developments located within walking distance of each other on Main Street and State Street). A post office operated at Taylorville from 1825 until 1893; however it did not serve any resident during that time period because mail shipments arrived only once per week instead of twice per month as they do now! A general store opened on Main Street near present day Western Avenue around 1870 which continued operation until 1979; however it closed down due to economic reasons unrelated to increased competition from larger stores throughout Peoria County! A blacksmith shop also operated out of what is now called Brown's Place on NorthMain Street from about 1870 until about 1903 before being combined with an adjoining house into what is now known as Old First Baptist Church which opened there in 1903! In 1865 local farmer John Jenson built an addition onto his home which served as the first permanent courthouse for county government; this courthouse still stands today and can be seen from most parts of town! Today Effingham High School offers classes inside this building originally designed for agricultural training purposes! Finally another post office called “Harding” operated at 515 N State St from 1893-1914 before moving across I-55 eastward into Urbana where it remained until closing down several years ago….the last stop on mail traffic coming into Peoria County was at “Logan’s Corner” just outside Urbana where notice boards still exist today advising drivers approaching town off I-55 that they are entering “Old Chicago” territory
