Taylorville, Illinois is a small town located in the Central Illinois region of the United States. It has a population of approximately 10,000 and is home to several firearms shops, including one that specializes in gun barrel history. The city was founded in 1871 by settler Captain John H. Taylor and became an incorporated municipality in 1916. The first gun shop opened in 1916 and was run by Dr. George Tilton. In 1928, the shop moved to its current location on Main Street and continued to sell firearms until it closed its doors in 1986. Today, the store remains as a museum and offers tours for those who want to learn more about guns and their history. The Gun Barrel Museum began as part of the efforts to preserve firearm culture within Taylorville throughout the years. In 2006, Mayor Bob Fenton spearheaded an effort that resulted in the construction of two new buildings adjacent to each other on Third Street near the intersection of Main and Polk Streets. These buildings were dedicated as “the Gun Barrel Museum Annex” and “the Gun Barrel Museum Shop Annex” respectively; these structures serve as both educational centers for school groups as well as storage places for confiscated weapons from law enforcement investigations. One significant aspect ofGun Barrel Museum's history is their role within community outreach initiatives such as “Bringing Guns Back into Service Day” which occurs every year on Saturday morning at 9am local time across town at Old Chicago Pizza & Pasta (Old Course Drive). This day celebrates firearm restoration techniques used by police officers during raids or other criminal activity which often leads to confiscation of firearms from individuals found with illegal weapons. Many members of the community come out to participate in this event which helps teach kids about howguns can be restored/used again while also helping make communities safer for all involved!

The first settler in Taylorville was Nicholas Doane who arrived in 1828. The community began as a log cabin built by John C. Butler and others on the neck of land that forms the western edge of present-day Taylorville. In 1847, the village grew when it was incorporated as a town under the name Mount Olivet Township. The cornerstone for what became Taylorville's first courthouse was laid on October 5, 1853 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt with Masonic ceremonies held at nearby Soldier Field that day. On November 3, 1954-the centennial of its incorporation-Taylorville became a city with full voting rights under Illinois law and named after Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt once again as Mayoralty Head of City Affairs/Mayor pro tempore/. In 2002, TaylorVILLE celebrated its 150th anniversary with an event entitled "A Century of Progress." This commemorative edition included speeches from mayors William Jairo Ramos (2002–2007), Lisa Madigan (2007–2011), Rahm Emanuel (2011–2015), Bruce Rauner (2015–2018) and Scott Walker (2018). The first settler in Taylorville was Jacob Jenkins, who arrived in 1824. By 1830, the community had grown to include twenty-one homes and two stores. In 1834, the village's first school was built and served grades one through twelve. In 1892, the first electric telegraph line linking Chicago and Madison was established in Taylorville. The townspeople of Taylorville fought hard against efforts to move them out of their land during the Great Migration of the late 1800s and into larger cities or towns across Illinois. Despite this opposition, many people from Taylorville decided to migrate during and after World War II. Afterward, many residents turned their attention to renovating old homes and businesses which they could live in for free or for a modest fee. Today, much of what made Taylorville unique has been lost within its boundaries: The township's only store closed down in 2006; most of the remaining homes were built before 1920; and few traces remain of either its agricultural or industrial past. However, there are some reminders that continue to make life here more challenging: A small park named after local hero Will Rogers is open to enthusiasts all year round; a crosswalk near downtown is still tagged with "No parking" signs from when it was simply a dirt road; and an annual corn festival provides an opportunity for locals to taste fresh Iowa corn while also raising money for charity
Taylorville was founded in 1836 by Joshua and Jane Taylor. The town grew rapidly due to the production of agricultural goods, tobacco, and other products. The first post office was established in 1836, and the first school was built in 1839. In 1840, the United States Post Office moved from Springfield to Taylorville. In 1865, the town became a township. The population of Taylorville peaked at 10,000 in 1955; however, it has since declined dramatically.
