Taylorville is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village of Taylorville was merged into the city of Chicago in 2002. The first settlers in what is now Taylorville were Ensigns John and Mercy Cook who arrived in 1814 from Vermont. They homesteaded on a farm that still stands today on the east side of town. The Cooks raised corn, potatoes and beef cattle until they sold their land to Captain Isaac Goodrich and his family in 1832. Captain Goodrich's sons also bought land around what is now Taylorville and began to build homes there such as the one that has been standing since 1857 known as "The Old Home". In 1865, General Nathan Bedford Forrest turned up at Green-Wood Cemetery looking for new ground to plant Confederate dead because he had exhausted all other burial sites in Tennessee. By 1870, most of the good farmland around present day Taylorville had been developed by white entrepreneurs including Elijah Howe who built an ice cream shop on State Street which became one of Illinois' first major shopping malls In 1902 (the same year that Kane County was created), Abraham Lincoln was born hereabouts and spent his earliest years here before moving westward with his family to Fordham University where he received his law degree in 1916. He later served as county attorney for Kane County from 1916-1918 before being elected president in 1920; he re-elected two times more but lost to Franklin D Roosevelt after a close election victory over Harry S Truman After serving four terms as president, LBJ vacated office on January 20th, 1964 and returned home to Dallas where he continues to reside today
In 1818, the first house on this site was built. A post office called Taylorville was established in 1829. In 1851, the first store was built and in 1865, the first school was built. The town of Taylorville was incorporated in 1871.
