The town was named for James Taylor, an early settler and a native of Ireland who arrived in 1809. Taylorville was organized as a village in 1847 and became a city in 1893. Taylorville is located at (41.688667, -87.867627). According to the 2010 census, it has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,394 people, 554 households, and 367 families residing in the town.[2] The population density was 113 people per square mile (46/km²). There were 635 housing units at an average density of 53 per square mile (21/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White,[3] 2% African American,[4] 0% Native American,[5] and 0% Asian.[6] Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2% of the population. There were 554 households out of which 36% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52% were married couples living together, 11% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31% were non-families. 24% of all households were made up of individuals and 10% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older. Taylorville is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,048 at the 2010 census. The community is named after General James K. Taylor (1811-1875), who served as the 18th Governor of Illinois and U.S. Attorney General under President Abraham Lincoln. The first post office in Taylorville was established on July 7, 1847, and was known as "Fenton". It was renamed to "Taylorville" on October 8, 1881 by act of the United States Congress following the death of General James K. Taylor. On December 11, 1907, the village had a population of 2,043 and incorporated as a village charter with that number remaining until it became an unincorporated community on March 6, 1959. The Village of Taylorville is located in eastern Mclean County at (42°10′25″N 89°37′57″W). According to the 2002 census data from USGS Topo map released in May 2006,[1] thetotal land area within jurisdiction limits for which property tax assessment has been levied for calendar year 2005 or 2004 totaled 522 acres (217 hectares).[2] This total does not include any land classified by USGS as “environmental” because it forms part of surrounding rural Conservation Districts/ Villages adjacent to or includingTaylorville.[3][4][5] As such there are many tracts that still remain un assessed and undeveloped due to this lack of protection from development.[6] However according to recent plans developed by township trustees[7], much more land within Township boundaries may be included in current assessments through annexation or condemnation proceedings if certain conditions are met including approval from Township Board & Mayor
In 1836, the first post office in Taylorville was established. The town grew rapidly and by 1840 had a population of over 100 people. By 1850, the town had become an important center for agricultural production and served as a stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1875, the town's first school was built.
